Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico,
Central America, and Colombia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia.
Dahlia hybrids are commonly grown as garden plants. The Aztecs gathered
and cultivated the dahlia for food, ceremonies, as well as decorative
purposes, and the long woody stem of one variety was used for small
pipes.
Dahlias are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera
species including Angle Shades, Common Swift, Ghost Moth and Large
Yellow Underwing.
The dahlia is named after Swedish 18th-century botanist Anders Dahl . In
German the dahlia was known during most of the 19th century as Georgia,
being named after the naturalist Johann Gottlieb Georgi of St.
Petersburg, Russia. (sourse - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dahlia ).
Dahlia plants range in height from as low as 12 in (30 cm) to as tall as
6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m). The flowers can be as small as 2 in (5.1 cm) in
diameter or up to 1 ft (30 cm) ("dinner plate").

Three months... Three months past since I published the last post. Why didn't I blog? What have I done? Well, I quit one of my jobs and attended English class, that is where I spent that time.
So, I studied for three month, but did I learn anything? So far I don't know.
Anyway, I am back with hope to finish "The Wood Duck story".
Female.
"The Wood Duck is considered by many naturalists
America, if not the world."

So, Wood Duck...
Some sources describe Wood Duck as the most beautiful duck in the world. But even it is my favorite duck I can't be agree it is most beautiful duck in North America either! Here is spectacular Harlequin Duck in North America and amazing Mandarin Duck in Eastern Asia and Russia. Which one is more beautiful -? I don't know!
However wood duck's female - less colorful than male (it's has a white broad teardrop-shaped eye-ring and a whitish throat. You can't be mistaking when you sea that), but still one of the most gorgeous and more colourful than any other female ducks in North America!
Introduction. Many years ago I received a gift from my Mom and Dad. It was a pretty big box. When I opened it I found 7 books inside. The books were in the size of encyclopedias and had silver titles - " The life of animals". Each book was talking about different creatures: mammals, fishes... and of course one book was about birds! There I was introduced to the most spectacular duck for the very first time. I returned to the article and photo so many times!

I almost learned it by heart! But time has past. I grew up...medical school, army, work, immigration to Israel...The book was lost and I forgot about my favorite duck!

However, a few years back I found myself in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Here my passion to nature came back and when I read a birding guide I came across a photograph of THAT duck! Yes, it was a photograph of the spectacular WOOD DUCK!
You now, cuting a grass, planting a seeds and another staf like that. By the way I hold my camera with me and there what I got!
My welcome guest
It is just one of them. A few years ago, when I put first feeder, hardly one humming was coming weekly. Today I can say they are my PERMANENT VISITORS. More then 13-18 appreciate my hospitality daily!
My tenant.
That guy living in birdhouse I built for...Red-breasted Nuthatch. Some thing wrong here! May be I made a mistake? I am not frendly whith inches. Or that doesn't care about? Any way, usualy they are very jumpy, but that time the guy was surprised by empty feeder, which one I clined up a few minet before, and also was screaming at me!
